I'd been wanting to introduce the ten and teen boards to my students for a bit. Printed out and laminated some and everything. Made bead stairs and some ten bars out of pony beads and pipe cleaners. I really didn't like the result and never got around to using them.
I got inspired to finally take the plunge I'd been researching when someone told me that their kids were happily using golden bead material that they had made. That weekend I bought beads and wire and set to work. I bought Darice clear acrylic beads, wire, and mesh plastic canvas since that's what the craft stores I was at had. It cost less than $18. I bought a 1000 count bag of Sun Gold, 2 little mixed color bags (I'm not sure what the count was 100, or 50? I could have done with 3 or 4 or a bigger mixed bag), a small bag of Root Beer, and a small bag of Hot Pink since those colors were missing from my mixed bags. I should have looked harder for a yellow, too. I love how sparkly the clear beads are though.
I got 20 gauge wire since it was the thickest wire the craft store had, but I'd prefer to have gotten 16 or 18 gauge wire.
Alhamdulillah my father bought a tool kit last November and my mom had recently bought different types of pliers so I didn't have to buy any pliers.

I used this series of tutorials to get me started. I really enjoyed this project and actually started making the small bead chains which means I'd have to make more bead squares too *hides face* (putting this link here so I remember it. This one too Skip Counting with Montessori Bead Chains) I need a lot more beads. Is this something I really want to do so close to the end of the school year? At least I'm getting better at the loop making technique. Figured out something new on the last few bars on the last hundred square. It's been very satisfying to have beaded over 1000 beads even if it was easy, straightforward and simple work.
Dare I make a thousand cube? My mom is still unsubtly hinting that I should make one. She really wants to feel the weight of one. I'd have to either ask at the place where I bought the beads if they have any more in Sun Gold (I only saw one bag while I was there, thankfully a 1000 bead bag), or find a different supplier. I made everything shown plus a little more with one 15ft spool of wire. I bought two, so that's another push to make a thousand cube. I can't have superfluous wire hanging around, can I? I'm thinking of printing out thousand cubes from this page so that I can have more on hand. This blog post has a nice idea for giving them some wait and a lil more durable.
I only made 10 ten bars but this shows what you could at one time with more. I found some base ten 10 bars in the house though so will probably sub those in instead of making more bead ones.
